A famous author's first novel
They say trouble always comes in threes. And for sisters Lyn, Cat and Gemma Kettle, the year they turn thirty-three is no exception. Sensible Lyn is struggling to balance being a mother, wife and businesswoman without losing her mind. Cat, whose perfect marriage is the envy of all her friends, never suspects that her husband has been hiding a secret that will tear her life apart. And directionless Gemma, who changes jobs and boyfriends every few months, has just met a new man who could be the one to unlock her hidden past. Through everything, the bonds of the sisters are strong enough to withstand whatever life throws at them. That is until the night of their thirty-fourth birthday dinner, when home truths are revealed and things are said that can't be taken back.
Every book by Liane Moriarty that I have read I have really enjoyed so when I had to pick a first author's book for my challenge it was easy to decide. I wasn't disappointed. While the other two books of hers that I have read fell more in the mystery genre this story of three sister's held my attention as well as the other ones. I found myself connecting with all three sisters at different times in the book which made each of their stories relatable even though they are all so different. If I had to pick one I related to most it would be Cat.
One of things I really enjoyed was how in between a lot of the chapters there was a page written from the perspective of other people who had observed the triplets throughout different times in their lives. It added an extra layer to the story that I really appreciated.
If you want a quick, enjoyable read this is the book for you. I would probably give it 3.5 stars but because there is no half star option I rounded up.
“Try not to saddle yourself with too distinct a personality too early in life. It might not suit you later on.”
"Maybe it wasn't that hard to be happy."
